Exercising the Virtue of Patriotism

As we celebrate Independence Day, July 4th, let us ponder more deeply the virtue of patriotism which St. Thomas Aquinas describes for us (Summa Theologica, 2a, 2ae, Q. 101). Patriotism is an aspect of justice that involves having right relationships with our country. What do we consider to be our patriotic duty? Flying the flag? Marching in a parade? Paying our fair share of taxes? Obeying our country’s laws? Exercising the right to vote? Participating in good governance? Promoting the common good? Or is it “all of the above?” May we be inspired to make our country stronger by exercising each day the virtue of patriotism. Have a blessed and safe Independence Day.
